Once a month anyone can get free groceries at the Loaves and Fishes food pantry, located in Charlottesville near Albemarle High School. Bring a couple of recyclable grocery bags, meet with a counselor to help you plan a menu, and get groceries to help you make the items on your menu.
Anyone can use the Loaves & Fishes pantry.
USDA Groceries
If you meet the eligibility requirements below, you can also get food from USDA's The Emergency Food Assistance Program and Commodity Supplemental Food Program for people age 60 or above.
You qualify for USDA groceries if any one of the following is true:
Your household income is 150% or less of the USDA’s federal poverty level (for example, $31,170/year for a family of three, or $18,210/year for a single household);
Your entire household receives SNAP or TANF; or
You live alone and receive SSI or Medicaid.
USDA food is given only once a month for each qualifying household. Loaves & Fishes does not share any information regarding our clients with anyone other than what we are required to report annually to the USDA.

The Salvation Army Salvation Army Public Meals Program is open 365 days a year, serving three times a day. Monday - Saturday breakfast and supper are open to the public, as is breakfast and the mid-day meal on Sunday.

This program provides hot, nutritious meals to homebound Charlottesville and Albemarle residents who are unable to cook their own meals and who have no one to help them.
Meals are delivered by volunteers every Monday-Friday, including all holidays that fall on weekdays. Serves some areas of Albemarle County. Charges vary with income, and can be reduced/waived for those eligible.

MEALS ON WHEELS WEBSITEThe Jefferson Area Board for Aging (JABA) provides home delivered meals to low income, homebound older adult struggling to prepare your own well-balanced meals. JABA offers meal options through Mom's Meals and a partnership with Meals on Wheels. All meals are delivered right to your door. Volunteers provide friendly check-in calls.
The program provides meals to adults 60 years or older who are incapacitated due to accident, illness, or frailty. Charges for this service may apply depending on recipient's income.
