For nearly 30 years, FEAP has been a trusted, confidential resource, recognizing that privacy is essential to the support we provide.

What is the Confidentiality Policy?

We follow strict professional, internal, and governmental guidelines to ensure that any information shared with us is handled appropriately. Your interactions with FEAP are not part of your personnel file or your medical record, and we maintain a secure database that is only accessible to the FEAP care team. Your FEAP records will not be accessible by your supervisors, management, Human Resources, family members, or coworkers.
Are there any Exceptions to Confidentiality?
FEAP is committed to protecting your privacy, with the only exceptions being:
- If you are in immediate danger of harming yourself or others
- If child or elder abuse or neglect is present
- If a court of law issues a legitimate subpoena or court order
At the start of your counseling session, we will review our confidentiality commitment, explain these exceptions, and answer any questions you may have.

FEAP is here to provide a safe, supportive space where you can seek help without concern. If you have any questions about confidentiality, we encourage you to reach out!
Does FEAP follow HIPAA requirements?

While FEAP does not provide medical services, FEAP follows Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) guidelines in our handing of protected health information.

All records are documented in a proprietary database, accessible only to FEAP. These records are not connected to UVAHS or any other medical records platform
What if I’d like FEAP to share information about my session with a health care provider, work supervisor or family member?

With the exception of circumstances of imminent risk of harm to a client or other individual, FEAP must obtain the individual’s consent prior to disclosing information about attendance or content of a session.
What if my manager or a family member inquires about my engagement in FEAP services?

FEAP will not confirm or deny an employee’s contact with FEAP without written permission from the employee.

Managers/supervisors are encouraged to refer employees to FEAP; however, FEAP will not provide information to a manager about a referred employee without the employee’s written permission to do so.
If I request a virtual appointment, what platform is used?

For virtual appointments, FEAP uses HIPAA compliant Zoom.
