Intimate Relationship Support
Healthy relationships provide connection and security, but stressors can create challenges. FEAP offers guidance to strengthen communication, support, and resilience in relationships.
Intimate relationships are a fundamental part of life, shaping our well-being, security, and satisfaction. However, external stressors—such as global events—can strain relationships like never before, making effective communication, emotional support, and resilience more important than ever.
FEAP offers confidential consultations for individuals and couples seeking guidance on relationship concerns, as well as educational seminars on key topics. Our services help clarify needs, improve communication, and provide referrals to additional resources if desired.
Relationships naturally evolve, and challenges—whether expected or sudden—can impact daily life and work. Whether facing conflict, separation, or the complexities of long-term commitment, FEAP is here to support employees at every stage of their relationships, fostering healthier connections and overall well-being.
Domestic violence is a pattern of coercive behavior—through actions or threats—used to gain power and control over a current or former spouse, family member, intimate partner, or co-parent. It affects individuals across all relationships, backgrounds, and identities.
Abuse can take many forms, including physical or sexual violence, emotional or psychological intimidation, verbal abuse, stalking, economic control, harassment, and physical threats or harm.
FEAP consultants are trained to understand the complexities of domestic violence and can connect individuals with appropriate resources. If you or someone you know needs support, please call 434.243.2643. If you are in immediate danger, call 911.
Warning Signs of an Abusive Relationship
Does your partner:
Verbally insult, demean, or threaten you?
Isolate you from friends, family, or support systems?
Monitor your schedule, follow, or harass you?
Restrict your mobility or control your finances?
Explode in rage and assault you physically or sexually?
Dismiss your words, abilities, ideas, or actions?
Choke, punch, slap, kick, or otherwise harm you?
Apologize after each incident and promise to stop?
If you are experiencing any of these signs, please contact FEAP for support. Employees, family members, supervisors, managers, and faculty can also reach out for guidance on domestic violence concerns.

Caring for others—whether as a parent, step-parent, disability caregiver, or elder caregiver—is both meaningful and demanding. Raising a child is one of life’s most rewarding experiences, but it also comes with challenges. Every caregiver benefits from understanding, guidance, and support as they navigate the ever-changing journey of parenting. FEAP provides confidential, in-person consultations for parents and step-parents looking to grow in their roles. Upon request, we also offer educational seminars on parenting topics specific to children and teens. Our services are designed to offer information, tools, and support to help parents manage the daily complexities of raising children.
Does FEAP See Children?
FEAP does not provide direct counseling to children. However, we offer support and guidance to parents regarding their child’s emotional or behavioral health and can connect caregivers with appropriate community resources.
Older Adolescents (16+): On a case-by-case basis, FEAP may provide brief therapeutic support if deemed beneficial in consultation with the parent(s). Confidentiality guidelines will be discussed with both the adolescent and their parents.
Adult Children (18+): FEAP services are available to employees' adult children. As legally independent individuals, their confidentiality is protected, and parental involvement is at their discretion. A Release of Information is required for parents to receive updates unless mandated by law.
Positive Discipline
We all want our children to thrive, and discipline plays a key role in shaping their development. While many resources offer parenting advice, each caregiver must make daily decisions about what approach works best for their child.
FEAP offers educational seminars on age-appropriate discipline to help parents clarify their child’s needs, establish effective parenting strategies, and connect with additional resources if needed.

Trauma can be experienced directly or vicariously. Events such as sexual or physical assault, racial bias or discrimination, or witnessing a horrific event can significantly impact our brain, emotional well-being, and ability to function.
FEAP offers trauma-informed assessments and short-term counseling services for employees navigating immediate crises or historical trauma that actively affect daily life.
Traumatic stress is a natural response to abnormal events. For many, symptoms may persist for several days or weeks before gradually subsiding. However, some individuals benefit from professional support to aid in the healing process.
While trauma affects everyone differently, here are some common symptoms:
Inability to recall parts of the traumatic event
Intrusive, upsetting memories of the event
Flashbacks (feeling as if the event is happening again)
Irritability or sudden outbursts of anger
Hypervigilance (being constantly on alert)
Difficulty falling or staying asleep
Nightmares
Intense distress when reminded of the trauma
Physical reactions (pounding heart, sweating, or nausea)
Avoidance of trauma-associated activities, places, or thoughts
Feeling emotionally numb
FEAP trauma services provide education about natural trauma responses, foster resilience, and encourage healthy coping strategies. Recognizing and addressing symptoms early can make recovery more manageable. Our trauma services focus on stabilization and healing while connecting individuals to community resources and practices that can help transform their journey from surviving to thriving.
